Beautiful morning with a flooding tide and light South wind; I decided to launch in the southeast corner of Katama Bay and paddle against the current out through the Norton Point breach for a little quality time in the Atlantic– I can only hope for conditions as agreeable on August 9! With the GPS it became evident that there’s a 1+mph current running west-to-east along that end of South Beach when the tide is flooding around Wasque Point and up the Muskeget Channel; I averaged 4.5 mph heading west for 2 miles into it, turned around and immediately saw speeds of 6.8, 6.9– topping out at 8.4 with no increased paddling effort. This will be very helpful if I can close in on Wasque Point at the target time.
Saw one curious seal just outside the breach breakers where the water deepens– and bluefish schooling along the shore just north of the Point. Sneaked back in through the second, mini-breach between the tip of Norton Point and the sandbar island east of it (quad copter shot was taken a month ago– the bar between has gotten much shallower since).
5.25 miles, moving avg. 5.3, max speed 8.4; 59:13…. an easy day with a little bit of surfing.
