Aquinnah town meeting approves lighthouse funding

Community Preservation Committee chairman Derrill Bazzy thanked other Island towns for supporting lighthouse relocation effort.

The annual town meeting season came to a close Tuesday night as Aquinnah voters overwhelmingly approved a lean budget and a major spending request for the relocation of the Gay Head Light, but stopped short of changing the name of State Road.

A total of 54 voters attended the meeting.

Voters approved $155,000 toward the lighthouse relocation project. Spending requests included $120,000 from Community Preservation Act funds for moving the structure and landscaping, and $25,000 from free cash for fundraising and public relations materials. The vote came three hours into the town meeting.

A total of $1.2 million has been raised in public and private funds toward the $3 million project. The five other Island towns have all agreed to contribute to CPA funds to the project.

“Future generations will be able to enjoy this lighthouse thanks to the hard work of all the town committees,” said Len Butler, chairman of the building committee for the lighthouse effort.

Town community preservation committee chairman Derrill Bazzy lauded the Islandwide support for the cause.
